The field guide / Education
QR codes for education that put the right resource beside the task
A worksheet, display or campus sign has one immediate job. Link it to the resource that helps someone take the next step, without making them search a folder of unrelated material.

Campus sign
Find the current public visitor information.
Label the resource before the scan
Write what the code opens: ‘Read the fieldwork checklist’ is more useful than ‘Scan me.’ For a document, include its purpose and keep the file practical for a phone. A short video can demonstrate a process, but provide a text alternative for the important steps.
Use a PDF page for a single document or a List of links for a small, ordered collection. Avoid turning a simple handout into a directory that leaves learners guessing which resource matters.
Check access from the learner’s side
A resource that opens for a teacher may still demand a staff login for everyone else. Test links in a signed-out browser and, where appropriate, with the learner access your institution already provides.
Keep grades, student records and private class information in approved systems with their own access controls. A QR code shares a location; it does not grant permission or replace the controls on the destination.
Keep an alternative route available
Print a short readable address or instructions for finding the material without a camera. Some learners cannot use a phone in class, and a scanning-only route can exclude people using other devices or assistive technology.
For recurring courses, decide whether each term needs its own code. Updating a dynamic resource is convenient, but an older handout should not silently open a different assignment. Label versions and retire materials deliberately.
Questions worth settling first
Can a QR code bypass a school login?
No. It opens a destination, and that destination’s access rules still apply. Test the complete journey with the intended audience’s permissions.
Do learners need an Editable QR Code account?
They do not need an account simply to open an available hosted page. A linked school resource may require its own login.
